6661 – Black Sands

Maui, Hawaii - 2011; The black sands of the south shores of Maui are formed as volcanic rock, and gradually pulverized over thousands of years by the persistent wave action at the shore. Much of the sand is actually tiny lava pebbles that are worn smooth. The lush green vegetation and the black rock beach fall in stark contrast to the bright blue ocean and white spray from crashing waves.
