524 - Crane in flight

Bosque, NM - 2011; In November thousands of Sandhill cranes migrate to the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico. Sandhill cranes are the most plentiful of the world's cranes and range in height from three to five feet. Weighing as much as 14 pounds, the Sandhill cranes large wingspan allows it to soar like hawks and eagles. Using thermals to obtain lift, they can stay aloft for hours on end by only occasionally flapping their wings.
