Big Island Hawaii - 2011; Kilauea volcano sits on the southeast flank of the massive Mauna Loa shield volcano. It is the youngest and most active volcano of the Hawaiian Islands, as well as the world’s most active volcano. Kilauea has been in continuous eruption since 1983, adding an abundance of new coastline to the island. Lava flowing down an elongated rift enters the cool ocean water at dawn creating blasts of color and steam.
